0:00 Speaker A: We're about to go head to head. Speaker B: In an epic relay race at Red Bull Hardline, the toughest mountain bike race on earth. Speaker B: Each team has one mountain bike rider and one motorbike rider. Speaker B: The mountain bikes will start the race and the motorbikes will finish it. Speaker A: Oh, it goes wide and he goes down. Speaker B: The team with the fastest time down the mountain will be the winners. Speaker B: Who's going to win? Speaker B: Let's find out. Speaker B: On the motorbikes we've got Billy Bolt, five time super Enduro World Champion.
0:28 Speaker C: This is my very first time seeing the mountains in the track. Speaker C: Seeing any of. Speaker C: And from the start to whatever point this is is savage. Speaker B: We've also got Johnny Walker, the only man to ever complete the Red Bull Hardline track on a motorbike. Speaker D: I've got experience from being here, so, yeah, I do have a little bit of an advantage. Speaker B: But this race has a strategy twist. Speaker B: Each team gets to decide at which point on the course they want to hand over to their teammate.
0:55 Speaker C: Wow, this place is mental. Speaker B: Is he going to go high on the rocks? Speaker B: He does. Speaker A: Whoa, mate. Speaker B: The same happened to me. Speaker A: That's. Speaker B: The tyre came off last year. Speaker B: It kicked me out. Speaker B: Red Bull Hardline is the gnarliest course ever. Speaker B: First time Billy's seen the course. Speaker B: Johnny's checking it out again and it's all coming flooding back. Speaker D: It's such a scary track. Speaker D: You look at it on the photos and it looks big, but when you actually come here, it's so much gnarlier. Speaker D: I think Billy's a little bit intimidated, but also like he's putting on a brave face.
1:23 Speaker D: He's not going to want to show any weakness. Speaker A: Oh, I've got it dialed. Speaker C: Yeah. Speaker C: The 90s, they're not small. Speaker C: Do you know what? Speaker C: I'm actually pretty nervous for the second. Speaker A: One and I feel like you get. Speaker C: A lot of speed off that. Speaker D: You do. Speaker D: Yeah. Speaker D: I was really breaking. Speaker D: I remember.
1:52 Speaker A: That's chill. Speaker C: That's chill. Speaker A: Let's go, baby. Speaker C: This is what's next. Speaker A: I don't like this one. Speaker A: This one's quite a big drop down in it.
2:19 Speaker C: Obviously, it's massive. Speaker C: The videos make it look so easy, but real life, it's. Speaker C: It's definitely not the first time hitting this. Speaker D: I was so scared. Speaker D: I think I had about 10 to 15 run ins. Speaker D: I'm just gonna have to watch a video and then just pull the pin and go. Speaker D: And then drag Billy off. Speaker D: Or he can drag me off one or the other. Speaker C: Did you pull up off this, like. Speaker C: No, just off, just.
3:05 Speaker C: Oh, my God. Speaker A: I landed off the second last one in the bumps and my fore end. Speaker C: Just went like this all the way off the takeoff. Speaker D: These ones? Speaker C: Yeah. Speaker C: This has been a savage day. Speaker A: What the. Speaker B: Right. Speaker B: In this relay race, we are allowed to exchange the baton or swap from push bike to motorbike wherever we want on the course, within reason.
3:35 Speaker B: So I think now we're starting to figure out who's fast, who's slow. Speaker B: It's time to go and talk to our teammates. Speaker B: I'm not gonna not tell you my plan. Speaker B: Stressful. Speaker B: We're gonna figure out where we swap. Speaker B: I think this is where we should hand over. Speaker B: Right above the lily Pad and the 90s. Speaker B: You're so fast down there. Speaker B: Like, mountain bikes won't touch you. Speaker B: So if we do it somewhere around. Speaker D: Here, I think literally before the takeoff, because as you said, the berm's not too good for you to carry speed. Speaker C: Yeah. Speaker D: I'll set off third gear, fourth gear, fifth gear away, right down the bottom.
4:03 Speaker B: You might not like my plan, but do you know, like the big step down, cliff drop thing? Speaker B: From there down, you'll actually be faster than me because it's a bit flat. Speaker B: You've got an engine, so if you're flat, to be honest, you'll end up doing two thirds of the entire track. Speaker C: So we're swapping above the step. Speaker B: So if I come, I'll do the whole top section, which is more than you think. Speaker C: Any pedaling up there or you're just cruising down? Speaker B: If you'd like the opportunity to ride more of.
4:30 Speaker B: I'm giving it to you. Speaker C: Right. Speaker C: How generous of you, Matthew. Speaker A: Well, Matt Jones, all heart there. Speaker A: It's his brother, twin brother, Jono Jones, that will drop in first. Speaker A: Though three times a racer here at Red Bull, Hardline Wells, plenty of experience on this track, and his teammate, Johnny Walker, the only man ever to ride a motorcycle from the top to the bottom of this thing. Speaker A: So here's the benchmark, then. Speaker A: Jono Jones on track.
4:55 Speaker A: His twin brother there set him off and he's fast across this open rock section. Speaker A: The bedrock coming through. Speaker A: Horrible shapes there. Speaker A: Snatching your wheel left and right from you. Speaker A: Jono Jones, though, loving these dry conditions through that compression. Speaker A: They're going to set up to the right here just to get out of the V for this big drop. Speaker A: There he goes. Speaker A: And now a gap across.
5:20 Speaker A: Oh, comes up short on that. Speaker A: You can hear it from Joto on the brakes. Speaker A: Now things get technical. Speaker A: A few different lines in here. Speaker A: Goes low, catches that berm. Speaker A: Now he's going to be on the brakes super, super steep. Speaker A: Now this new section for last year's hardline. Speaker A: Oh, cross the gap there, nicely into this big catch berm and off the brakes across this camber. Speaker A: Sets up again, another big drop, pulls for that, gets it well and nicely into that berm.
5:49 Speaker A: And now Jono gonna enter parts of the track that will fill the more familiar to him. Speaker A: Forty feet down, massive impact on the landing of that step down and hard on the brakes now, fighting to get it stopped for this left hander. Speaker A: And of course Matt, his brother, will have already handed over to Billy here. Speaker A: And it's hard to believe a motorcycle will be able to deal with this tight single track as quick as we're seeing this.
6:14 Speaker A: Threading the needle, Jono Jones picking his way through these tiny gaps. Speaker A: Look at this. Speaker A: And now he hands over to the three time Red Bull Erzberg winner, Johnny A. Walker. Speaker A: Onto the lily pad. Speaker A: Step on, step off. Speaker A: Squashing on the way off on the brakes for the first 90. Speaker A: Hard accelerate again. Speaker A: No problem. Speaker A: Scrubbing that second one. Speaker A: Coming into these berms now again, a little tight I would say for the motorcycle, but flip flopping the extra weight left and right beautifully through here.
6:48 Speaker A: And now approaching this ultra technical tight section. Speaker A: Loads of rocks there. Speaker A: Super, super tight. Speaker A: Ah, and a mistake from Walker then he stalls as he gets pushed over to that rock on the right. Speaker A: And now, well, this the most terrifying feature, the road gap. Speaker A: Walker safely across there and now entering into another section where that motorcycle is going to feel massive.
7:13 Speaker A: Super tight turns, super steep, rocks everywhere. Speaker A: Taking his time but now he's going to have to get on the gas as he approaches this drop. Speaker A: Now Walker sends it, no problem there and he should be able to get on the power a little bit now as he goes across the mountain in this direction for the last time. Speaker A: The kind of going he's more used to in the world of Enduro. Speaker A: Getting on the power wherever he can.
7:39 Speaker A: Holds a tight line around this left hander. Speaker A: And onto the last straight he comes now and he's on the power. Speaker A: So just this 70 foot finish line jump to go. Speaker A: Johnny walker crosses the line. Speaker A: 2:57, 7:9. Speaker A: The time to beat. Speaker D: Oh my God, what a run that was. Speaker D: Mad Jono came in and he's like shouting at me, he's like, go, go, go. Speaker D: And I like set off as fast as I could and I did a pretty good run, a few little mistakes, but I think we're going to be close for a win there.
8:11 Speaker A: Well, Johnny sounding quietly confident, but there's the small matter of this dynamic duo about to drop in. Speaker A: Matt Jones, there he is. Speaker A: He's going to hand over to the five time super enduro world champion, Billy Bowe. Speaker A: A little further up the track actually than his brother Jono Jones just handed over to Johnnie Walker. Speaker A: So let's enjoy this. Speaker A: Matt Jones attacking this top section and showing us just how rough this Red Bull hardline track is.
8:37 Speaker A: Nowhere to hide up here. Speaker A: Trying to resist reaching for those brake levers. Speaker A: Gets out on the grass there a little bit. Speaker A: Coming up now towards this first drop. Speaker A: Jono. Speaker A: Super quick off here, Matt. Speaker A: I'm going to say a little bit more cautious. Speaker A: Gets a better kick out of there though. Speaker A: Makes the landing. Speaker A: Split one coming up. Speaker A: What's it going to be then for Matt Jones? Speaker A: Oh, and he's back.
9:02 Speaker A: Nearly two seconds back then, so work to do here. Speaker A: Heading now into this really steep drop. Speaker A: Trying to stay off those brakes as much as he can. Speaker A: Safely across there and into this long catch berm. Speaker A: Now he's going to turn left here. Speaker A: Another drop and he's going to hand over to Billy Bolt. Speaker A: Remember this is way above where the previous team handed over. Speaker A: Massive risk then can Billy Bolt match Jono Jones down through this huge single track section.
9:31 Speaker A: Two seconds in arrears. Speaker A: Oh, fast down there though. Speaker A: Perhaps the motorcycle able to stop or offering more traction. Speaker A: But surely it's gonna lose time here. Speaker A: The front push in there for Billy Bolt. Speaker A: Oh, and spectacular stuff. Speaker A: I didn't believe you'd see a motorcycle ridden through here this quick. Speaker A: Sniper rocks everywhere. Speaker A: Next split coming up then what's Billy Bolt done? Speaker A: Ah, he pulls back 1.8 seconds.
9:58 Speaker A: Point 2. Speaker A: Only now to find to take the lead here. Speaker A: Incredible stuff. Speaker A: And Bolt really aggressive then through these big 90 furs. Speaker A: Landed hard on the power then hard on the brakes there. Speaker A: Look at this. Speaker A: So Billy Bolt, one of the loosest units, one of the wildest riders and one of the most brilliant rides on his emotion. Speaker A: And it's a man who does not like to get feet. Speaker A: And now this technical section.
10:24 Speaker A: Johnnie Walker made a mistake in here, right there. Speaker A: Billy Bolt cleanly through there. Speaker A: So surely now the clock will be green. Speaker A: Next split coming up then. Speaker A: Here it is. Speaker A: What's it gonna be? Speaker A: Oh, it's green by 1.32 then. Speaker A: So Billy Bolt doing the impossible here. Speaker A: So quick down through those two big jumps. Speaker A: That mistake of Johnnie Walker really proving costly.
10:49 Speaker A: But look at the pace of Billy Bolt down here. Speaker A: He is just eating this track up. Speaker A: Off this drop he comes. Speaker A: No mistakes for, oh, he goes wide and he goes down. Speaker A: Billy Bolt crashes out of Red Bull hardline here. Speaker A: Oh, my goodness, me. Speaker A: Well, he was risking it all. Speaker A: He rolled the dice. Speaker A: He paid the price. Speaker A: Riding so brilliantly, taking massive chances, but a catastrophic error there.
11:19 Speaker A: Well, it wouldn't be Billy Bol if it went down any other way. Speaker A: That's how he rides. Speaker A: Last straight for him. Speaker A: Johnny Walker looks on. Speaker A: His prediction was right. Speaker A: Amazing stuff. Speaker A: But it's Johnnie Walker and Jono Jones who take the win. Speaker A: I crashed. Speaker C: No. Speaker A: Oh, mate. Speaker B: Oh, man, I'm gutted. Speaker B: Our strategy was better and our riding was better.
11:47 Speaker B: And that's the race. Speaker B: Fair play.
